Fariiq Abdullah Promises Power for Every Rajasthan Village

I was reading a news article that mentioned that the renewable energy minister Farooq Abdullah had promised that he will bring electricity to all Rajasthan villages within five years. Now, that’s a tall statement. One doesn’t really give much weight to politicians’ statements anymore – most times they are even worse than weathermen’s predictions – but Farooq is thought to be quite serious about his job, so perhaps he intends doing something about it.
What exactly would he be able to do? I doubt he expects to pull a grid line to thousands of villages in such a short span of time. It must be renewables (especially solar PV) that he must be relying on.
Well, the Indian government had even earlier stated that it plans to have ALL Indian villages electrified by 2012, that would be about 80,000 villages.
