All data for 2023.
Total GHG Emissions (CO2eq): 3.4 billion tons.
Total Power Industry Emissions:
- Total emissions: 270 million tons (CO2eq)
- Proportion of total: 8%
Trucking is one of the largest emitters of the transport CO2 emitters in India, and dominates road transport emissions. Of the 2500 billion ton km used for freight in 2020, trucks alone contributed to 1500 of these, with even rail freight contributing only about 700 billion ton kms (Source)
Here’s a further breakup of the emissions from road transport. I used multiple benchmarks, some of them from earlier years, and used suitable assumptions based on vehicle use trend changes in the past few years:
- Total: 270 million tons
- Trucking: about 48% (130 million tons)
- Two wheelers: 18% (49 million tons)
- Four wheelers: 16% (43 million tons)
- Three wheelers: 12% (32 million tons)
- Buses: 5% (13 million tons)
Hope this is useful.
