Half a billion blooming solar panels.
That’s what the US would get if Hillary Clinton is voted to power, or at least that is what she has promised
“I want more wind, more solar, more advanced biofuels, more energy efficiency,” she said at a weekend rally in Iowa. “And I’ve got to tell you, people who argue against this are just not paying attention.”
The two goals were unveiled in a video posted to Clinton’s campaign website Sunday, and are part of a comprehensive agenda on climate change that will be laid out over the next few months.
Think about 500 million panels. That’s a heck of a lot.
At 300 W per panel, that adds to 150 GW. At 3 kW per rooftop, she is looking at about 50 million rooftops covered in solar panels. USA has about 120 million households, so she is looking at almost 50% of US houses having rooftop solar panels.
Look at it another way. The world today has only about 200 GW of installed solar capacity, a large % in ground mounted systems. So, there is perhaps about 50-60 GW of rooftop worldwide currently. She wants the US alone to have 3 times the current global cumulative capacity of rooftop solar in the US alone.
Audacious.
Now, India is not far off, not in goal setting at least. MNRE is looking at 40 GW of rooftop solar by 2022. Assuming we get there, we would have installed about 70% of rooftop solar the world has today in the next five years.
We are all grown-ups, so there is only so much credibility we attach to politician’s big talk.
But for once, I am quite keen to believe that these guys actually mean it.
