All of us at EAI are pleased to know that Harish Hande of SELCO has won the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay award – considered Asia’s Nobel Prize. A fully deserved one.
How many IIT-ians do we find coming back to India? How many among those few coming back actually taking up social entrepreneurship? And how many among this miniscule set of people slog it out over almost two decades in such difficult conditions?
SELCO was cofounded by Harish way back in 1995 and it has stuck to its vision of helping the rural and poor in India get light through solar. Light for these poor could mean a lot more than we think. It could mean the path to escape velocity – for escaping from poverty.
Congratulations Harish. For once, you made me proud that I am from an IIT too.
