There was a recent news item about Tata Power planning 700 EV charging stations.
The company has already installed 100 charging stations in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad which it plans to take to 300 by Mar 2020…
They are essentially mapping cities where EVs are being launched and trying to expand their charging network to 700 by next year (2021)
That brings up the question of just how many EV charging stations are indeed present in India? To be more specific, how many public EV charging stations are available?
While providing estimates for EV charging stations, the estimates need to be split into two:
- Normal AC charging stations, and
- Fast DC charging stations.
EV Next’s analysis suggest that as of end 2019, there are about 500 public AC charging stations across India (for all the installers together). We estimate about 125 DC charging stations installed in the country end 2019.
Compared to global estimates of almost 0.75 million EV charging stations (estimate end of 2019), with about 0.45 million AC charging stations and 0.3 million DC charging stations, the extent of EV charging availability in India is puny. This once again shows why growth of personal electric vehicles in the country will take a while, especially electric cars which could require fast DC charging stations and cannot be satisfied with home charging alone.
