Introduction

Samsung SDI is the chemical division of the Samsung group and is the 3rd largest manufacturer of Li-ion batteries in the world.

Company Profile

Samsung was founded by Lee Byung-chul in 1938 as a trading company. Over the next three decades, the group diversified into areas including food processing, textiles, insurance, securities, and retail. Samsung entered the electronics industry in the late 1960s and the construction and shipbuilding industries in the mid-1970s; these areas would drive its subsequent growth. Samsung SDL is a part of the Samsung group providing total solution for material and energy. The company has a battery division situated in Delhi, India

  • Has a partnership with Mahindra electric and Bosch to supply Li-ion batteries to the OEM operating from 2011.

Global Work

  • BMW and Samsung SDI first teamed up to develop electric vehicles in 2009
  • Samsung SDI had started mass production of lithium-ion battery for electric cars in its plant in Ulsan in South Korea in 2013
  • Glencore of London signed a five-year deal to supply battery maker Samsung SDI with up to 21,000 tonnes of cobalt, in January 2020.
