Introduction

Underwriter Laboratories(UL) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the UL Mission through the discovery and application of scientific knowledge. They conduct rigorous independent research and analyze safety data, convene experts worldwide to address risks and develop standards to guide the safe, sustainable commercializing of evolving technologies.

Company Profile

UL LLC is a global safety certification company headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois. It maintains offices in 46 countries. Established in 1894 as the Underwriters’ Electrical Bureau (a bureau of the National Board of Fire Underwriters), it was known throughout the 20th century as Underwriters Laboratories and participated in the safety analysis of many of that century’s new technologies.

R&D

UL India has set up a battery testing and validation lab at IIT-Madras Research Park in August, 2019.    

Global Work

  • UL, announced in August 2019 that 4R Energy Corporation, a joint venture of Nissan Motors and Sumitomo Corporation focusing on the effective reuse of EV batteries for energy storage systems, is the first organization worldwide to be certified to UL 1974, the Standard for Evaluation for Repurposing Batteries in Tokyo.
  • Global safety science company UL completed the acquisition of US based technical and management consulting company kVA in June 2019. kVA specializes in training and advising automotive developers and suppliers on the safety of autonomous vehicles and electrification of automotive systems.
