How Big Data Makes EV Batteries Smarter

  • Predictive analytics for better batteries – Twaice is a Munich-based developer of predictive analytics platforms for batteries using digital twins and cloud-based software. The platform gathers data (Big data) from BMS, such as voltage and temperature, to assess the current condition of the battery. The digital twin software develops simulation models of batteries, helping OEMs choose the right cells and develop better batteries. In addition to battery intelligence for development and in-vehicle use, Twaice is working with insurance companies and fleets to develop value-add services such as battery aging and residual value assessments.
  • Big Data for validating second life batteries – ReJoule, a southern California-based developer of a battery health assessment process validates the capability of second-life batteries to cost-effectively be used for energy storage to integrate renewables into the grid. The company’s battery grading technology reduces the cost of testing battery SoH by dramatically reducing testing time. In a one-minute test, the technology can get within a 5% capacity estimate – a process that usually takes hours.
  • Connected car services – Peugeot, back in 2015 teamed up with IBM to develop new connected-car services. The idea behind this was to collect and analyze driver data to help other organizations, including retailers, car dealerships and smart cities. IBM’s Big Data can be harnessed to greatly improve the ownership experience of an electric vehicle. These automobiles are capable of producing, storing and collecting huge amounts of data, including apps on the dashboard, battery charge rates, acceleration levels, location, and much more. In addition to assisting motorists with planning trips, checking tire pressure, and learning the condition of the battery, these data can also be hugely valuable for those that make the cars.
  • Optimized routes and info about charging stations – ‘Hi-charger’ provides optimized routes and information about charging stations – Using big data analysis technology, the Hi-Charger app provides detailed information on the location and status of the charging station along the way. Hyundai is providing the ‘Hi-Charger’ service exclusively for electric vehicle users. The Hi-Charger app provides functions such as searching electric vehicle charging stations across the country, booking charging stations, and diagnosing vehicle conditions while charging. It also selects a charging station available along the route and recommends optimized routes for individual driving patterns.
  • Big Data for optimized EV charging – The availability of charging systems and efficiency is all data that companies like Ford, IBM, and utility companies can utilize in order to decide where to place charging areas, to manage power grid capacities, and continue improving the vehicles on offer. With access to such constant streams of data, supporting the electric vehicle industry can be made easier. IBM is currently collaborating with Pacific Gas & Electric and Honda in order to coordinate the charging of their vehicles. Honda’s Fit electric cars, due to be launched soon, will transmit data on battery charge rates to the cloud — called the Electric Vehicle Enablement Platform — and relate it to grid performance rates in the location of the vehicle.
  • Shared consumer data – The Volt is fitted with Chevrolet’s OnStar communication system that can broadcast driver data via its cellular connection. Many Volt drivers are choosing to share their habits online with other electric car drivers, in a kind of electric economy challenge. Manufacturers promote these data collection services as a bonus to consumers, helping them save fuel and money, or allowing them to see stats on their car via a mobile phone app, but the information is also a goldmine for carmakers.
  • Bigdata for Ev service platforms – Luokung Technology Corp. announced that  eMapgo Technologies Co., Ltd. and Beijing New Energy Automobile Co., Ltd. have agreed to collaborate on the development of autonomous driving projects for BAIC BJEV’s electric vehicles (EVs).EMG recently worked with BAIC BJEV to provide HD map services in autonomous valet parking (“AVP”) for BAIC New Energy vehicles. The two parties will cooperate in depth on L3 (conditional driving automation) to L4 (high driving automation) autonomous driving related projects.
