Rock dust – an unlikely decarbonization hero
Spreading rock dust on farmlands could capture two billion tons of CO2 per year, says a study.
In principle, that should not be surprising. Rock materials, during the weathering process, capture CO2 and convert it into carbonates and sequesters it for a very long time.
So why cannot large CO2 emitting countries – which also conveniently happen to have a very large supplies of rocks or equivalent waste material – use this vast resource? Especially when spreading rock dust could also possibly increase the fertility of the soils?
Why not indeed, I too ask.
