Oceans are by far the largest sinks of CO2, but…
Oceans store about 38,000 billion tons of CO2 – more than ten times the amount of CO2 of all the other sinks COMBINED.
So, should we store all the CO2 we capture over the next few decades under the sea? Even if we capture 1000 billion tons by 2100 (the upper limit as suggested by IPCC for a 1.5 deg C above pre-industrial), that is less than 3% of all the CO2 the ocean stores currently.
While ocean storage of CO2 appears slam dunk if looked at this way, the reality could be vastly different, given the complex and sometimes fragile nature of the ocean ecosystem
