Distributed generation is one of the real virtues of solar power – given its modularity and low maintenance requirements.
Not surprisingly, most of the solar power generation globally was from rooftop solar power in the initial stages before ground-mounted utility solar took over.
Rooftop solar in specific, and distributed solar in general, still form a significant portion of the global solar PV capacities. Out of the approximately 1 TW (1000 GW) of solar PV power generation capacity installed worldwide, about 40% (close to 400 GW) is from distributed solar. By 2030, distributed solar alone could be close to, or beyond 1 TW of installed capacity worldwide.
If rooftop solar is running a 200 meter race, utility solar is sprinting the 100 meter dash. From about 700 GW currently, utility solar will be at least 1.5 TW, more likely closer to 2 TW, of installed capacity globally by 2030. Imagine that – the entire global thermal power generation (coal + gas) capacity currently is not a lot more than 2 TW, and thermal power plants took over 100 years to reach that capacity.
These massive amounts of solar power plants require engineering and design before they are installed, and monitoring & maintenance support once they are. One can guess the amount of opportunities available for folks providing solutions in engineering, design & monitoring for solar power plants.

When I congratulated him on his startup’s superfast growth, the startup’s CEO Nithish told me something to the effect, “you ain’t seen nothing yet.”
You can perhaps see more of the future from Nithish’s story at the Climate Startup Stories workshop on Mar 18, 2023, at Haddows Club, Chennai.
Nithish will be one of the ten climate startup founders who will be sharing their startup journeys at the event.
