  • Aim to efficiently produce hydrogen for use in remote rural locations; providing a zero-carbon solution for food production in agriculture and forestry operations.

Here’s an article posted in Grampian Online.

    According to the article,

    • SRUC researchers partner with Locogen, a leading renewable energy specialist, to boost rural hydrogen production
    • The project is one of 32 awarded funding under the Hydrogen Innovation Scheme
    • The initiative aims to make a significant contribution to the hydrogen production program

This project, called the HydroGlen project, aims to demonstrate the feasibility of enabling farming and other rural communities to become self-reliant, low-carbon energy producers and exporters. It seeks to generate 100% of their energy requirements (electricity, heating, and transport) using a combination of renewable electricity, on-site hydrogen production, compression, and storage.

Scotland’s Hydrogen Innovation Scheme plays a very vital role, not just in its funding, but also in defining the objectives of the country for sustainability.

    Deep dive into our work

The Hydrogen Innovation Scheme has several key objectives:

    1. Innovation in Hydrogen Production, Storage, and Distribution: To support innovation in hydrogen production, storage, and distribution technology to reduce the cost of hydrogen produced in Scotland.
    2. Transition and Diversification of Scottish Companies: To enable Scottish companies not currently active in the hydrogen sector to transition or diversify their operations to help anchor the hydrogen supply chain in Scotland.
    3. Collaboration and International Partnerships: To encourage collaboration between the private sector and academia, attract additional investment in Scottish hydrogen innovation activity, and support Scottish companies to partner internationally to drive innovation and build and export Scottish capability/expertise.
    4. Development and Use of Test and Demonstration Facilities: To support the development and use of Scotland’s world-class test and demonstration facilities, which will act as centres for future hydrogen innovation.

And yes, India has a similar of guidelines too, called the National Green Hydrogen Mission!

The main objectives of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission are:

    1. Make India a Global Hub for Green Hydrogen and its Derivatives: The mission aims to position India as a leading producer and supplier of Green Hydrogen in the world.
    2. Decarbonize the Economy: The mission aims to significantly decarbonize the economy by reducing dependence on fossil fuels and increasing the use of renewable energy.
    3. Reduce Fossil Fuel Imports: The mission aims to reduce fossil fuel imports by Rs. one lakh crore and create a sustainable energy future for India.
    4. Achieve Technology and Market Leadership: The mission aims to enable India to assume technology and market leadership in Green Hydrogen, making it a key player in the global clean energy transition.
    5. Create Jobs and Stimulate Economic Growth: The mission aims to create 600,000 jobs by 2030 and stimulate economic growth through investments in the Green Hydrogen sector.
    6. Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions: The mission aims to abate nearly 50 MMT of annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, contributing significantly to India’s climate goals.
    7. Develop a Comprehensive Ecosystem: The mission aims to develop a comprehensive ecosystem for Green Hydrogen production, utilization, and export, including the creation of Green Hydrogen Hubs and the establishment of a robust Standards and Regulations framework.
    8. Reduce Production Costs: The mission aims to reduce the cost of Green Hydrogen production to $1.5 per kg by 2030, making it competitive with fossil-fuel based alternatives.
    9. Increase Renewable Energy Capacity: The mission aims to increase India’s renewable energy capacity to 125 GW by 2030, supporting the growth of Green Hydrogen production.
    10. Enhance Energy Security: The mission aims to enhance India’s energy security by reducing dependence on fossil fuels and increasing the use of clean energy sources
