NTPC, GGL initiate India’s first green hydrogen blending project in Surat’s Kawas township, with green hydrogen produced locally.

  • NTPC, India’s largest power generator, has commissioned the country’s first green hydrogen blending project in collaboration with Gujarat Gas Limited (GGL).
  • The project involves blending green hydrogen in the piped natural gas (PNG) network of NTPC Kawas township, Surat, marking a significant milestone in India’s energy landscape.

Here are the main benefits of blending green hydrogen with natural gas:

  1. Reduced carbon emissions: Blending green hydrogen, which is produced using renewable energy, with natural gas can lower the overall carbon footprint of the fuel mix. Studies have shown that a 20% hydrogen blend can reduce emissions by up to 7%.
  2. Utilizing existing infrastructure: By blending hydrogen into the natural gas network, the vast existing pipeline infrastructure can be leveraged, reducing the need for costly new dedicated hydrogen pipelines. This makes the process more cost-effective, especially for long-distance transportation.
  3. Potential cost savings: In India, NTPC found that blending up to 10% green hydrogen with piped natural gas (PNG) can be very economical compared to using LPG. For a 5% blend, the benefit was estimated at Rs 63.95 per month per household, and for a 10% blend it was Rs 5.77 per month.
  4. Enhancing energy security: By blending domestically produced green hydrogen, countries like China can reduce their reliance on imported natural gas and move towards greater energy self-sufficiency.
