UNSW researchers develop hydrogen-diesel hybrid engine; innovative engine reduces CO2 emissions by more than 85%.

Here’s a post from The Federal including the following:

  • Researchers have successfully converted diesel engines to run on 90% hydrogen, resulting in a 26% increase in efficiency.
  • This innovation offers a cleaner alternative for existing diesel engines, significantly reducing their environmental impact.
  • Retrofitting diesel engines to use hydrogen is a quicker solution compared to waiting for the development of entirely new fuel cell systems.

Several countries and regions around the world are exploring hydrogen-diesel hybrid technologies for their potential to reduce emissions from existing diesel engines:

Germany

Bosch is developing a hydrogen injection system that can be retrofitted to diesel engines. Their goal is to enable a cost-effective transition to cleaner fuels without requiring completely new vehicle platforms.

Japan

Japanese companies like Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Toyota are researching hydrogen-diesel hybrid engines. Kawasaki has demonstrated a system that uses a small amount of diesel to ignite a hydrogen-air mixture, achieving a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to a conventional diesel engine.
