Accelerating Rooftop Solar - What Should Be Done? - India Renewable Energy Consulting – Solar, Biomass, Wind, Cleantech

Ah, what a scorching question we’ve thrown onto the solar panel, eh? Our LinkedIn community, 40 strong, turned up the heat on this debate.

Poll results

Higher awareness 10%
Govt subsidies & incentives 50%
Make it compulsory 23%
Better design & aesthetics 18%

Half of you are singing in the choir for government subsidies & incentives, while a gutsy 23% are ready to mandate solar panels as if saying, “Let’s not just flirt with sustainability; let’s marry it.” And then, there’s the 18% who, like me, think we ought to make solar panels not just functional but fashionable. Because, why not?

So, what’s the solar secret here?

India’s rooftop saga is simmering on a slow burner, especially when you glance at the giant leaps in ground-mounted solar. We’ve got over 50 GW of solar farms sprawling like green giants, yet our rooftops are barely whispering in the solar dialogue, shy of the 10 GW mark against a lofty 40 GW target. It’s like having a Ferrari in the garage but cruising around town on a bicycle.

In comparison, the global north is turning rooftops into power stations, showcasing a blend of high fashion and high function in solar installations. It’s clear; the sun doesn’t discriminate, but our adoption strategies do.

Here’s my thought…

Rooftop solar isn’t just about planting panels; it’s about harvesting hope, innovation, and, let’s not forget, savings. It’s a statement, a movement, a revolution that’s waiting to be unleashed. With the right push from policies, a dash of compulsory measures, and a sprinkle of design magic, we could turn this slow dance into a solar sprint.
