Oil and Natural Gas Corp Ltd, India’s leading energy explorer, will start producing coalbed methane (CBM) from a block in eastern India soon (it has already probably started, as it was supposed to start late 2008). ONGC said in a statement it would ramp up production to reach a peak of 400,000 cubic metres of gas per day by 2011, but did not say how much it would pump initially.
400,000 cu m = 5 billion cu ft, less than 1% of the 1 tft we use every year (about 0.5%), but it is a start
