SIAM and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) have hit upon an ideal blend of 18 per cent hydrogen with CNG in order to produce the least amount of NOx and give the highest power to vehicles. This hydrogen-blended CNG which is called HCNG is among the latest technology that is being considered for reduction in vehicular pollution. In a move towards converting to greener fuel, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has started the process of optimizing the engines of certain vehicles.
The transport sector comes in at the third spot after the power and agriculture sectors in contributing to carbon emissions in the country at present. According to the ministry for environment and forest, the automobile sector contributes 15-20 per cent to the nation’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. By 2030, the contribution is likely to go up to 25 per cent.
