Kolkata’s Raj Bhavan became the first governor’s house in the country to go solar.
President Pratibha Patil switched on the 12 solar power panels amid an august gathering at the governor’s residence on Monday evening, barely a few hours after the Copenhagen summit began.
The Kolkata Raj Bhavan, incidentally, used to be the seat of British imperial power and served as the residence of the Governor-General of India between 1804 and 1912.
Ever since Gandhi started staying here, Raj Bhavan has taken several initiatives towards going green. In 2008, an audit of the energy consumption of all possible aspects in Raj Bhavan was initiated and several correctional measures, such as reduction in power consumption and fuel consumption, were taken.
