When solar power makes a difference between life and death

Solar PV is the only renewable power technology that is truly modular – show me any thing else that can work as well at 1 W as it can at 1 GW (=1000000000 W)…This modularity and the offgrid uses it enables is something most people know about but possibly do not realize its power.
While large solar power plants capture our attention, real value from solar for the next decade could from its use in small-scale, remote, offgrid applications.
In Kalahandi,
Odisha, portable maternity kits include a portable solar torch along with basic diagnostic kits for testing for anaemia, blood sugar levels, malaria. These kits enable pregnant women to get home-based check-ups and have had a positive impact on mortality rates. In Assam, solar-powered medical refrigerators installed in boat clinics serve the state’s vast network of islands that face annual floods and prone to water-borne diseases. We are talking about solar making the difference between life and death here. Innovations in offgrid solar can thus be hugely valuable.
