Algae – especially microalgae – has been the holy grail for biofuels for almost 25 years
If scientists are still slogging at it, there’s a reason.
Microalgae can yield up to 50 times the oil compared to conventional oil crops, making it perhaps the only biomass feedstock that has the potential to COMPLETELY replace liquid fossil fuels.
However, multiple challenges along the entire value chain – especially in economical cultivation & harvesting – are hampering the commercialization of algae-based fuels, currently making them unviable.
Will these challenges be overcome soon?
