Finnish shipping company Meriaura, engine manufacturer Wärtsilä, and Green NortH2 Energy to construct a cargo ship powered by green ammonia.

  1. A green ammonia powered cargo ship will be ordered and operated by Meriaura and Green NortH2 Energy is going to hold responsibility for supplying green ammonia fuel for it.
  2. Its delivery is targeted for 2024 and it is planned to start operating on green ammonia in 2026.
  3. It is said that it can also be powered by bio-oil or marine diesel oil (MDO).

Finland and the EU have implemented several economic incentives and subsidies to support the development of green ammonia infrastructure:

  1. Finland has invested heavily in renewable energy projects, with over 3 billion euros invested in wind power in 2022 and another 2 billion euros in 2023. This has resulted in Finland achieving self-sufficiency in electricity generation, providing a reliable and clean source of energy for green ammonia production.
  2. The EU’s Emissions Trading System (ETS) has created financial incentives for industries to switch from fossil fuels to cleaner alternatives. The high cost of emission allowances has made it more economical for heating and power plants to replace fossil fuels with electric boilers or bioenergy plants.
  3. Finland is funding studies and projects to develop feeding solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions from cattle, which could indirectly support the production of green ammonia as a replacement for fossil-based fertilizers.

With green ammonia’s advantages along with the various incentives in the region, this partnership is sure to make a key difference in the decarbonization landscape.
