Green Hydrogen-Powered Yachts - Baglietto's Bzero
Select Page

Baglietto introduces Bzero hydrogen production module that utilizes filtered seawater processed through AEM-type electrolysers.

Here’s an article posted in SuperYacht Times that talks about Baglietto’s Bzero project.

According to the article,

  • Baglietto’s Bzero project focuses on hydrogen production and fuel cell technology for sustainable yachting.
  • The project aims to increase the electric cruising range of vessels in zero-emission mode using hydrogen fuel cell technology on a hybrid or diesel-electric platform.

Here are some examples of similar innovations in hydrogen-powered marine vehicles:

Hydrogen-Powered Cruise Ships

Carnival Corporation is working on developing the world’s first cruise ships powered by liquefied hydrogen. The ships will use hydrogen in fuel cells to generate electricity for onboard systems and propulsion. This eliminates emissions while at sea, aligning with Carnival’s goal of achieving net carbon-neutral cruise ship operations by 2050.

Hydrogen-Powered Ferries

In Norway, the world’s first hydrogen-electric ferry, the “Future of the Fjords”, began operating in 2018. It can carry up to 400 passengers and 120 cars using batteries recharged by onshore hydropower. Another example is the HySeas III project, which aims to build a hydrogen-powered car and passenger ferry for Scottish island communities.

Hydrogen-Powered Cargo Ships

In 2021, the Port of Los Angeles announced plans to develop a hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric tugboat to support cargo operations. The project will demonstrate the feasibility of using hydrogen fuel cells to power harbor craft. Shipping company Maersk is also exploring the use of carbon-neutral fuels like hydrogen to decarbonize its fleet.
