  • India to see massive growth in green hydrogen sector; new green initiative announced by Adani Group to impact mining sector.

Here’s an article posted in Mining Weekly.

    According to the article,

    • India’s Advantage: Due to its favorable geographic location and abundance of natural resources, India has a significant advantage in the production of green hydrogen
    • Government Initiatives: The Indian government has launched the Green Hydrogen Mission, aiming to produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen per year by 2030

With the announcement of the heavy-duty zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) by the Adani Group, who is going to develop it in collaboration with Canada’s Ballard Power Systems and Ashok Leyland, a lot of growth can be expected for the future of the fuel in the mining sector.

There has also been growing recognition for Platinum Group Metals (PGMs)-enabled PEM electrolyser systems, which is going to be impacted massively within the mining sector by the announced initiative above.

The PGMs-powered PEM fuel cell technology offers several technical advantages that make it well-suited for powering heavy-duty mining trucks:

    Clean, Emission-Free Operation

The PGMs-enabled PEM fuel cells allow for clean, zero-emission operation of the mining vehicles. This provides significant environmental benefits compared to traditional diesel or other combustion-based powertrains, aligning with India’s broader decarbonization goals.

    High Energy Density

Hydrogen fuel cells, such as PGMs-based PEM technology, provide higher energy density than battery-electric options. This feature makes them ideal for demanding, long-haul mining truck tasks needing increased payload capacity and extended driving range.

    Rapid Refueling

One significant benefit of hydrogen fuel cell mining trucks is their faster refueling compared to battery-electric vehicles. This quick refueling, akin to diesel trucks, enhances utilization and productivity in mining operations.

    Scalability

The PGMs-enabled PEM fuel cell technology can be more easily scaled up to power larger, heavier mining trucks compared to battery-electric drivetrains, which may face limitations in terms of battery pack size and weight.

    Reliability

Fuel cell systems using PGMs-based PEM technology have demonstrated reliability and durability, which is crucial for the demanding operating conditions of mining applications.By leveraging the unique properties of PGMs, the PEM fuel cell technology provides mining trucks with a combination of clean, high-energy density, rapid refueling, and scalable power – making it an attractive solution for India’s sustainable mining future.
