Incorporating green hydrogen into aviation presents a promising pathway for decarbonizing the airline industry. Here are the main ways it contributes to this goal:

Zero Emissions During Flight

Green hydrogen, when used as a fuel, produces only water vapor as a byproduct, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional jet fuels. This is particularly important as the aviation sector accounted for approximately 2.4% of global CO2 emissions in 2022, with projections indicating that air travel could double by 2050. Utilizing hydrogen can help mitigate this growth in emissions.

High Energy Density

Hydrogen has a specific energy-per-unit mass that is three times higher than traditional jet fuel, allowing for potentially longer flight ranges without the associated carbon emissions. This high energy density can enable aircraft to operate more efficiently, making long-distance flights more sustainable.

Potential for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF)

Hydrogen can also be used to produce synthetic aviation fuels (SAF) through processes like the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. This involves combining hydrogen with carbon sources to create longer-chain hydrocarbons that can be used as jet fuel. This approach allows for a transitional pathway to decarbonization while utilizing existing aircraft technology.
