Clean Aviation Initiative in Europe to develop multiple projects including hydrogen infrastructure; major companies sign up.

Here’s an article posted in Ainonline.

According to the article,

  • Clean Aviation is a European initiative that aims to develop greener aircraft technologies.
  • The initiative is working on 20 projects to develop cutting-edge innovations, including electric propulsion systems, hydrogen and hybrid gas turbine design, and the next generation of high-power fuel cells.
  • Key players in this initiative include companies like Honeywell, Textron’s Pipistrel, Collins, and Safran

There are several other notable initiatives and developments related to hydrogen in aviation that are currently ongoing:

Hydrogen Hubs at Canadian Airports

Montréal–Trudeau International Airport, Toronto Pearson International Airport, and Vancouver International Airport have entered into agreements with Airbus and ZeroAvia to explore the development of hydrogen hubs at their respective facilities. The collaboration focuses on understanding the operational requirements for hydrogen aircraft, including supply chains, refueling needs, and regulatory frameworks. These hubs are expected to facilitate the transition to sustainable aviation and contribute to the goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Hydrogen Trials at Exeter Airport

Exeter Airport is set to launch trials in Autumn 2024 that will feature hydrogen-powered ground support equipment (GSE). This includes a hydrogen-powered ground power unit (GPU), pushback tug, and baggage tractor. The trials aim to assess the performance and efficiency of hydrogen technologies in airport operations.

Joby and H2Fly Hydrogen-powered eVTOL Aircraft

Joby Aviation, known for its electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, has partnered with H2Fly to develop a hydrogen propulsion system for its aircraft. This collaboration aims to integrate hydrogen fuel cell technology into Joby’s eVTOL designs, enhancing their range and sustainability. By utilizing hydrogen as a power source, the partnership seeks to address the limitations of battery-powered eVTOLs, particularly in terms of range and operational efficiency.
