Looking into Hydrogen Combustion Engine Trucks (HyCET) Research Project, led by BMW Group, with investment volume of €19.5 million.

Here’s an article from BMW Group about Hydrogen Trucks (HyCET research project).

According to the article, the important facts about the HyCET research project are

  • Goal: Develop and test hydrogen trucks for long-distance transport logistics.
  • Challenges:
    • Lack of existing hydrogen filling station infrastructure.
    • Technology is still under development.

Here are a few examples of similar research projects focused on developing hydrogen-powered trucks for long-distance freight transport:

Paul Hydrogen Power-Truck (PH2P) Truck

As part of a one-year pilot project, a 15.6-ton hydrogen truck has been in operation at DHL Freight’s Cologne site since February 2024. The PH2P Truck is the first medium-duty truck with hydrogen fuel cells that is ready for series production.

Kenworth and Toyota Collaboration

Kenworth and Toyota are collaborating on the development of the T680 FCEV hydrogen fuel cell truck, which boasts an impressive range of up to 450 miles under certain driving conditions. They plan to begin full-scale production in 2025.

Hyundai Hydrogen Truck Pilots

Hyundai has already deployed hydrogen-powered trucks in pilot projects in Switzerland and Germany. While the current number of hydrogen trucks is small, it is expected to increase rapidly through 2030.

Volvo Group Involvement

The Volvo Group is a partner in the HyCET project, which aims to develop and test two 18-ton and two 40-ton trucks with hydrogen combustion engines. The project also addresses the necessary infrastructure for widespread use of hydrogen trucks.

These projects demonstrate the growing interest and investment in hydrogen-powered trucking for long-distance freight transport. By addressing challenges such as vehicle technology, refueling infrastructure, and cost-effectiveness, these initiatives are paving the way for a more sustainable future in the transportation sector.
