  • Gujarat aims to develop localized hydrogen value chain; major stakeholders join hands in move towards decarbonisation of multiple sectors.

Here’s an article posted in Business World.

    According to the article,

    • Gujarat’s Initiative: The state has initiated the design of the Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster (HVIC) and is set to submit an Expression of Interest for the project
    • National Green Hydrogen Mission: India’s ambitious plan includes the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) with a budget of INR 19,700 crore to promote green hydrogen production

But there exist many challenges in setting up such an ambitious plan, none of which can’t be overlooked:

Establishing a localized hydrogen value chain presents several challenges:

    Deep dive into our work

    1. Infrastructure Development:
      • Building hydrogen production facilities, storage tanks, pipelines, and refueling stations requires significant investment.
      • Adapting existing infrastructure or creating new networks for hydrogen distribution can be complex.
    2. Cost and Economics:
      • Green hydrogen production costs are currently higher than fossil fuel-based hydrogen. Achieving cost parity is essential.
      • Balancing the cost of production, storage, and transportation while ensuring affordability for end-users is challenging.
    3. Energy Efficiency:
      • Electrolysis (the primary method for green hydrogen production) has efficiency losses. Improving efficiency is crucial.
      • Integrating renewable energy sources (like solar or wind) into the process requires careful planning.
    4. Safety and Handling:
      • Hydrogen is highly flammable and requires safe handling, storage, and transport.
      • Developing safety protocols and training personnel is essential.
    5. Scaling Up:
      • Transitioning from pilot projects to large-scale production involves scaling up technology, supply chains, and workforce.
      • Ensuring consistent supply and demand as adoption grows is a challenge.
    6. Market Acceptance:
      • Convincing industries, consumers, and policymakers to adopt hydrogen as an energy carrier requires awareness campaigns and policy support.
      • Overcoming skepticism and promoting hydrogen’s benefits are ongoing tasks.
    7. Regulatory Framework:
      • Establishing regulations for hydrogen quality, safety standards, and emissions reduction is critical.
      • Coordinating policies across different sectors and levels of government can be complex.
