C-Zero to build turquoise hydrogen pilot plant, with initial targets of 250 kg/day; raised $11.5 million from major companies.

Here’s an article posted in SP Global.

According to the article,

  • Bill Gates-backed startup, C-Zero, to develop ‘turquoise hydrogen’ pilot by the end of 2022.
  • Technology described as “critical to decarbonizing agriculture, manufacturing, and transportation sectors.
  • Funding round co-led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Eni SpA raised $11.5 million for C-Zero.

Implementing turquoise hydrogen at a large scale presents several challenges:

  1. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS): While pyrolysis captures carbon in solid form, managing and storing this solid carbon efficiently can be complex. Developing reliable CCS infrastructure is crucial.
  2. Economic Viability: Scaling up turquoise hydrogen production requires significant investment. Ensuring cost competitiveness with other hydrogen types (green, blue) is essential.
  3. Energy Efficiency: Although pyrolysis is more energy-efficient than electrolysis, optimizing the process for large-scale production remains a challenge.
  4. Safety and Handling: Handling solid carbon safely and preventing leaks during transportation and storage are critical concerns. Using LOHCs and ammonia are good examples.
  5. Policy and Regulation: Clear policies and incentives are needed to encourage adoption and address regulatory hurdles.
  6. Infrastructure Adaptation: Existing natural gas facilities must be retrofitted or repurposed for turquoise hydrogen production.
  7. Market Demand: Creating demand for turquoise hydrogen across sectors (power, industry, transportation) is essential for successful scaling. E.g. Japan aims to use turquoise hydrogen for power generation, industrial processes, and transportation. Their commitment to hydrogen adoption drives market demand.

Addressing these challenges will be crucial for realizing the potential of turquoise hydrogen in a sustainable energy future.
