The Approach
Step 1:
Green Facilities looks at each company’s energy use along three dimensions
- Use of heating fuels such as FO/LPG/Diesel
- Diesel use for backup gensets
- Grid power
Step 2:
It then evaluates all the renewable / sustainable energy options. The complete set of such options that are commercially viable today are:
- Solar PV – on rooftop
- Solar PV – power procurement from 3rd party
- Solar water heater
- Concentrating solar thermal
- Wind power – either captive generation off premises or 3rd party purchase
- Biomass power
- Biomass based heating
- Waste heat recovery/CHP/Cogeneration
- Back-pressure steam turbine
- Energy efficient heating solutions
- Energy efficient lighting solutions
Step 3:
It then cross-references currently available solutions with the client’s criteria and constraints (investment, space etc.) to identify economical solutions. The following matrix shows how available solutions can result in reductions in energy use along the three paths.
Currently available solutions | Furnace oil/LPG/Diesel for heating | Diesel for back-up power | Costly grid power |
