Indraprastha Gas Ltd to Invest Rs 1,200 Crore in 19 CBG Plants for Expansion

Oil & Gas | Biofuels | Opportunities

Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) plans to invest Rs 1,200 crore in 19 CBG plants across Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, aiming to produce half a million units of biogas, equivalent to 5% of its daily needs. The initiative will help in waste management, provide clean fuel to consumers, and contribute to environmental sustainability.

Notes

A most logical step for a natural gas major. India's CBG ecosystem is still a lot of talk and much less action on the ground - with only 1% of the target of 5000 CBG plants actually achieved.

Efforts by companies such as IGL could make some difference of course, but the real challenges in CBG are from the feedstock supply chain and the unfavourable economics for getting biogas from cellulosic feedstock such as paddy straw and other agri waste.

It would need other stakeholders - especially from the agricultural sector and from biotech/engineering R&D domains - to really move the needle.
