Gravity-based energy storage - Switzerland's Energy Vault & NTPC sign MoU

Source : PV Magazine India

Notes by Narsi

India’s largest power generating utility NTPC Limited is looking to deploy Switzerland-based Energy Vault’s EVx gravity-based energy storage technology and software solutions to support its clean energy transition.

Energy Vault’s EVx storage system is quite an interesting concept. It puts to admirable use the earth's gravitational energy. In some ways comparable to pumped hydro, it uses renewable energy when supply is abundant to drive motors and raise large blocks (instead of water) up to a height. When power needs to be discharged back to the grid, the blocks are lowered, harvesting the kinetic energy.

Another interesting point of the NTPC and Energy Vault collaboration will be the beneficial utilization of coal ash to manufacture composite blocks for Energy Vault’s gravity-based energy storage system. This sounds really cool, doesn't it?
