I have been saying for quite a while now that bio-based packaging alternatives - and not just bioplastics - should be considered as alternatives to plastics.
The difference between the two is that, bioplastics tries to make a product quite similar to plastic using renewable sources (making it expensive) while bio-based plastics uses simpler processes such as pulping and moulding to get you packages that are not closer to paper & cardboard packaging than plastic packaging, and as a result are quite competitive on economics compared to synthetic plastics.
Bambrew is yet another example of this trend.
