Punjab Steel Industry to Have 1 Day Power Cut Every Week
By Narsi Santhanam • Jun 21st, 2010 • Category: Uncategorized
A day of power cut for an industry as power heavy as steel! That’s a heck of a lot.
But that’s precisely what the Punjab steel industry is bracing itself for.
With demand for power overshooting supply, the Punjab State Power Corporation has decided to impose one-day power cuts on the steel producing industry starting soon. Worse, the agency announced that if the situation worsens, the power cut could be extended to two days per week.
In the peak summer, the demand for energy in the state has gone up to 1950 lakh units per day against a supply of 1800 lakh units – a gap of about 8%.
The power situation has worsened as the farm sector offtake has increased, as farmers across the state are in the process of sowing paddy across the state and the power utility has committed to supplying 8 hours of power to the paddy growers.
Interesting, isn’t it? Essentially, do you want food or steel? The answer is – obvious.
