An MoU for conducting feasibility study as well as preparation of DPR for establishment of 5 MW Solar Power Plant (SPP) in south Andaman and 1 MW Solar Power Plant in middle Andaman was signed between the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and the A&N administration recently.
The renewable energy sources have a vital role in development of A&N Islands, particularly in the context of the present generation by using expensive diesel oil which involves huge burden on the national ex-chequer, he said.
The solar plants, apart from capacity addition, would also help in minimizing peak load shedding, reducing the distribution losses experienced due to voltage drops. Under this programme, registered companies, as project developers, would be encouraged to set-up solar power projects on build, own and operate basis.
