Rooftop solar adoption is accelerating in India at a hectic pace.

It was only a few days back when we met a software company CEO who was keen that he converted his company’s entire rooftop of 10,000 sqft with solar panels. Reason: Partly to do with his “green conscience,” but mostly to do with the fact solarizing the rooftop provides him with energy security.

Starting with perhaps less than 5 MW in the independent, private sector, rooftop solar in India today has crossed 150 MW (EAI estimate). From almost no residences or commercial/industrial rooftops sporting solar panels in 2010, the country today has over 10,000 rooftop solar installations.

But this is just the beginning. By end of 2015, EAI estimates that the country’s rooftop solar installations would have trebled in capacity and would be close to 500 MW. This would also mean over 50000 installations (both domestic and commercial/industrial combined) between Mar 2014 and Dec 2015 – almost 2500 installations every month for the next almost 20 months.

In order to assist both the suppliers and consumers who are interested in rooftop solar, EAI is bringing out the first guide in India for rooftop solar – the EAI Rooftop Solar Guide 2014. This will be a comprehensive guide that will provide detailed inputs and insights for those keen on installing solar on their rooftops – be it 1 kW or 1 MW.
