Introduction
Audi AG is a German automobile manufacturer that designs, engineers, produces, markets and distributes luxury vehicles. Audi is a member of the Volkswagen Group and has its roots at Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. Audi-branded vehicles are produced in nine production facilities worldwide. Audi India Pvt Ltd is a division of Audi and the Volkswagen Group India. It was founded in 2007 with headquarters in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Product Profile
In August 2019, Audi India unveiled its first fully-electric model, the Audi e-tron EV SUV in India. The company planned on launching this SUV here by late 2020.
Future Plans
- The E-tron will be imported as a complete product instead of CKDs even though it receives much heavier customs tax (40%). The vehicle would not be sold in thousands and is limited to a narrow segment of customers.
- The company, however, said it is seeking clarity on some regulatory issues like battery disposal as it tries to firm up long-term strategy for electric vehicles in India.
R&D
The automotive technology manufacturer AVL developed a hybrid drive system and ran trials for an Audi in India in October, 2018.
Other Strategic Perspectives
- At the launch of the eTron, Audi India’s head said “Ideally the government should do something for PHEVs because it is a step towards electrification. It is the first step that you bring people from ICE to PHEV and eventually take them to electric cars”
Global Work
- Audi has delivered 18,500 of its all-electric e-tron SUVs globally since March 2019, when the vehicle first came to market.
- Audi plans to offer two variants of the vehicle, a Sportback 50 and Sportback 55. The Sportback will come to Europe first in spring 2020. The Sportback 55 will come to the U.S. in fall 2020.
