- The Tesla Cloud – The Tesla Model S is more than a next-generation electric automobile. Examining the infrastructure behind the Tesla Model S provides insight into the Car in the Cloud concept, and offers a glimpse of the future. Tesla’s programmed their on-board computer by customizing Google’s Android mobile operating system. Android is an open-source stack that powers many popular consumer devices such as smartphones, tablets, and now – automobiles. Tesla’s CEO has also said that the Model S will support third-party apps to extend each car’s functionality. Since a Tesla Model S is blessed with a large display and a handful of starter apps, it is clear that over time, the company will push more and more apps to the car via the Tesla Cloud.
- Edge computing + cloud computing – Edge computing focuses on the data that is close to where it is created, such as a smartwatch, an industrial robot, or a vehicle. The term thus complements the term cloud computing, which refers to the computing power in data centers. Edge devices and cloud computing are typically used in combination: The resulting data volumes are distributed among various edge devices and cloud services. Edge computing helps to bring machine learning models, which were trained in the cloud, easily to the device. Therewith the local available behavioral and sensor data can be used for predictions to improve user interaction. Expect to see the combination of edge computing and cloud computing applications in the area of electric mobility.
- IoT for power distribution management for EV charging – The City of Nottingham is to use a new open-source IoT platform to effectively manage the distribution of power across a fleet of electric vehicles (EVs), battery storage and solar power, harnessing innovative vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology in the process. The intelligent energy management system (iEMS) from OpenRemote is being used for its Clean Mobil Energy project to enable the city’s energy managers to maximize the use of locally produced renewable energy and cut carbon emissions and costs associated with charging EVs. Nottingham City’s pilot site at the Eastcroft Depot will combine three main elements: solar panels to generate electricity, a large lithium-Ion battery for energy storage, and a fleet of 40 EVs. V2G technology enables the EVs to be charged and discharged for operational purposes as well as providing additional short-term energy storage and grid balancing.
- Intelligent sub-stations to guarantee smooth functioning of fast charging stations – Siemens Smart Infrastructure has been selected by Aral AG, a subsidiary of the BP group in Germany, to install intelligent substations at some 30 existing gas stations. By using communicating hardware and IoT technology, Aral can obtain information about the status of the substations at any time. This will enable the service stations to guarantee their customers the full functionality of its ultra-fast charging stations even better than current.
- IoT enabled fast charging – Indian electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions provider firm EV Cosmos India has tied up with ChargeNET for setting up 500 public EV charging stations in India. They are providing IOT-enabled fast charging solutions on strategic locations in cities, highways, and hotels, where EVs will be charged in 15-30 minutes.
- IoT and cloud software-enabled audio upgrades – HARMAN’s industry-first EV Plus+ solution offers customers a platform of software-enabled audio upgrades as well as a cloud-based marketplace of apps and features for an in-vehicle experience that doesn’t compromise vehicle range or consumer enjoyment.
- IoT Cloud Platform for EVs – HiveMQ to create reliable connected car services that enhance the driving experience and create new revenue opportunities. Their enterprise MQTT platform becomes part of the connected car platform for moving information between the vehicle and the cloud. HiveMQ Cloud is a fully managed MQTT platform that connects IoT devices to any IoT cloud platform. HiveMQ partners with OEMs to collaborate on the development of the next generation of connected car platforms. The enterprise MQTT platform becomes part of the core infrastructure in moving information from the vehicle to the cloud.
- IoT Operating System and Platform for EV chargers – The EcoG IoT operating system for electric vehicle chargers provide the grounds to monetize the electric charger’s industry beyond power. EcoG aims to offer a software stack, open API, and a tailored management backend, which together create an environment in which all chargers can be accessed remotely. Using these tools means that it can also be customized to one’s needs. There is an opportunity for everyone. EV charging hardware manufacturers, charge point operators and infrastructure providers can ease their device management and cut costs on technical service.
- IoT in Electric Vehicles charging Management – FreeWire envisioned the Mobi Charger would use advanced IoT technology to be efficient, scalable and simple to install. FreeWire was introduced to Eurotech and found that Eurotech provides all of the IoT communication pieces that they had spent time creating in house. Eurotech offers an IoT gateway, cellular adapter, services, and Every ware Cloud platform developed to easily read data from devices and send it to the cloud for a complete IoT solution. FreeWire engaged with Eurotech to create a reliable, scalable communication infrastructure for the Mobi Charger. FreeWire believes there is a lot of insight to be gained in EV charging data that most of the industry is ignoring. Predicting demand on the grid and having enough supply to meet demand is essential to the success of EVs.
